Complementary diagnostic method to ultrasound for studying blood flow in arteries and veins.
Context
This exam is usually performed in the following situations:
- to exclude thrombophlebitis.
- to diagnose varicose veins or venous insufficiency in the legs.
- to detect narrowing of the arteries of the lower limbs, neck…
- to find an aortic aneurysm.
- to detect narrowing of the renal arteries as part of the assessment of hypertension.
Exam
Preparation
- Veins and arteries of the limbs ⇒ no preparation
- Neck arteries (carotid and vertebral) ⇒ no preparation.
- Abdominal arteries, aorta, renal arteries ⇒ fasting for 4 hours prior to the exam!
Duration of the exam: 10 to 20 minutes
